The Madd House BJJ Curriculum

Our curriculum is designed to provide resources for all of our members, whatever their stage of life or physical capacities, to make progress in BJJ. As long as you uphold your end of the bargain — show up and train — we will see to it that you are better after every session!

  • Adult Fundamentals: In this course our mantra is “Escape, guard, and sweep!” Class begins with a “warm-up” designed to increase your physical conditioning and to teach your body how to move like a BJJ player. Every month we will dedicate ourselves to learning one technique for each of the components of the mantra: escaping from a control position, maintaining a guard, and sweeping an opponent. The students will be shown how to build these techniques into a sequence, and there will be opportunities to apply them in live situational sparring rounds (for those who wish to do so). Fundamentals should be the priority class for white belts and junior blue belts, and all our members are encouraged to check-in with the basics.

  • Adult Intermediate: In this course our mantra is “Takedown, sweep, pass, advance, submit!” Class begins with a “warm-up” to continue conditioning and reinforce BJJ movement patterns while staying in touch with fundamental techniques. Every month we will dedicate ourselves to learning one technique for each of the components of the mantra: A takedown or a sweep, a guard pass, an advance to a dominant position, and a submission. The students will be shown how to build these techniques into a sequence, and there will be opportunities to apply them in live situational and open sparring rounds (for those who wish to do so). All belt levels are encouraged to attend this class.

  • Advanced Training Workshop. This session is for upper belts, members who have an eye on competition, or those who are nearing a major belt promotion. There will be a strong emphasis on pushing your training partners toward improvement and exchanging ideas. Sessions will consist mostly of live sparing. Members will be allowed to attend on an invite-only basis.

  • Kids I: This class is for children ages 4-11. The emphasis will be on fun and character development, but the kids will certainly learn BJJ! Basic movement patterns and techniques will be taught, and there will be plenty of chances for games.

  • Kids II: This class is for pre-teens and teens. Though there will be fun, at this point we will introduce greater emphasis on technique, conditioning, and live rolling.

  • Home School High School BJJ: This is a version of our Kids II class, but offered in the early morning or lunch hour. There will be bit more emphasis on live rolling. This is a class for teens who want to “get after it” a bit, but in a safe and supportive environment.

  • Women Only: Women and men are both welcome in our other adult classes, but we understand that many women will be reluctant to train with the proverbial “big sweaty guys.” This class will provide a comfortable environment for women to advance in BJJ. The content will be similar to our fundamentals class, but there will be an increased emphasis on situational awareness and basic self-defense. Teen and adult women are encouraged to join this group.

  • Executives: This class is for those of us who have achieved “a certain age.” Here our mantra is “Programmed to chill.” At a more mature stage of life many of BJJ players need to de-emphasize hard training and instead become more attuned to skill mastery, new technique, and fellowship. This class is designed to deepen good BJJ movement patterns, introduce new skills, sequence drilling, and teaching members how to “flow roll.” All members over forty are encouraged to join Executives.
